The Government has signed off on a €665m bailout for the health service next year.

The decision, which had been well-flagged in recent weeks, was taken following an incorporeal meeting of the Cabinet.

The supplementary funds are needed to cover the day-to-day running of the health service, as well as schemes such as free GP care.

They also provide for one-off payments relating to issues such as symphysiotomy.

"This is further welcome investment in the health service," said Health Minister Leo Varadkar.

"It takes account of some very important initiatives launched this year including the Winter Initiative, the extension of GP care to the youngest and oldest in society and reducing waiting times for a nursing home place under the Fair Deal scheme to between two and four weeks.

"It also addresses tougher maximum waiting times for in-patient and out-patient procedures."
