The home of Martin 'Viper' Foley has been raided today for unpaid taxes.
Officers from the Revenue Commissioners and Criminal Assets Bureau seized a large amount of cash, a car, a 600 CC sports motorbike and jewellery to cover unpaid taxes he owes which amount to almost €1 million.
The dawn raid was co-ordinated by the Dublin Sherriff's Office and was backed up by armed gardai who maintained a presence while officials searched the house on Cashel Avenue in Crumlin at 7.53am.
Foley owes €940,042.52 to Revenue in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties.
Sources said the raid was to cover a warrant for unpaid taxes, but the quantity of money and materials seized were not thought to be sufficient to cover the debt which Foley is still liable for.
Foley (63) declined to comment to the Herald this morning when asked about the seizures, and told our reporter; "get off my property".
The Viper is one of Ireland's most notorious criminals and has been shot on four separate occasions and has at least 14 bullet wounds.
He had been feuding with the gang led by exiled drugs trafficker John Gilligan in the 1990s but has continued to run into trouble since that time.
In the last major attack on his life, he was shot numerous times in broad daylight in Dublin in January 2008.
Although the attacker escaped in a white Ford van, Foley whispered his name to the first garda who arrived on the scene. The gun attack left Foley, who has dozens of criminal convictions, fighting for his life under armed guard in a private hospital ward at St James's Hospital for a number of weeks, but he made a full recovery.
That botched murder attempt was carried out by close associates of 'Fat Freddie' Thompson and sanctioned by international crime lord Christy Kinahan who lives in the Costa Del Sol, Spain.
Foley who married his long- term partner Sonia Doyle in 2013 remains a major target for the Criminal Assets Bureau.
In August 2012, Foley became involved in a short term feud with a young criminal nicknamed the 'Little General' who was given a severe beating by a cage fighter after a crony of Foley blamed him for damaging a car.
