Burglar told gardai where he hid jewels

A BURGLAR who took items of jewellery from a house later told gardai where he had hidden the stash, a court heard.

Hughie Cash (24) claimed he was depressed and abusing Diazepam tablets at the time after his wife lost a child.

Judge Hugh O'Donnell adjourned the matter for a probation report.

The defendant, of Daletree Place in Ballycullen, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to burglary at Pinewood in Ballybrack on June 3.

Garda Paul Lynch said Cash and an accomplice forced in the front door of the house, stole a number of items of jewellery and fled out the back.

Gda Lynch said the defendant was apprehended about 20 yards from the back wall. He co-operated with gardai, telling them where he had hidden the jewellery.

The court heard the house was empty at the time.

Defence lawyer Kim Moloney said father-of-two Cash was depressed and using Diazepam at the time of the offence after his wife lost a child, and he was stealing to feed his habit.
