Hollywood star Mel Gibson will "virtually" appear in Trim to mark the 20th anniversary of Oscar-winning film Braveheart.

Gibson, who is a freeman of the Co Meath town, has agreed to record a message to be broadcast on a 60m outdoor screen that will show the 1995 film to 1,200 people in the grounds of Trim Castle next month.

He is a supporter of event organisers the Sean Lawlor Artists Trust which helps strugg-ling actors. The organisation was founded by actor Sean Lawlor who played Malcolm Wallace in the movie. He died of cancer in 2000.

Hundreds of locals played extras in scenes for Braveheart shot near Trim Castle and other locations in Meath including Bective Abbey.
