Brave shop worker fights off intruders

A COURAGEOUS shopkeeper who fought off knife-wielding robbers said he is determined that "villains" will not curtail his late opening hours.

Malachy McGrane (49) fought back when two thugs wearing masks threatened him with a butcher's knife and demanded he open his shop's cash drawer.


The brave businessman struggled with his two attackers and forced them to flee empty-handed from his shop. He said he was "lucky to be alive".

The father-of-three was preparing to lock up his rural convenience store at Sandpit, near Termonfeckin, Co Louth, at 8.15pm when he was confronted by thugs wearing homemade balaclava masks.
