The serious injuries sustained by two gardai who were on the way to a deal with a road accident are a reminder, if one was needed, that members of the force put their lives on the line for us every day.
Our thoughts are with the traffic corps gardai who were hurt in the accident in Sligo.
Just last week, there was a separate incident in Clonmel, where another brave garda was dragged along the road by a getaway car after he prevented a burglary.
We owe a debt of gratitude to all members of the force who serve us, often for very little thanks.
They may be in secure and pensionable jobs, but there is no amount of money that could pay these men and women for the danger that they are often placed in during the line of duty while serving us all.
We send our best wishes to the gardai concerned as we hope they'll have a speedy recovery.
