Boy screams in terror as he finds pony dead with throat slashed

A PONY that had its throat slashed and bled to death in the corner of a field was discovered by a nine-year-old boy, the Herald can reveal.

The shocking discovery was made by the boy as he tended other horses in the field.

"I was in the field checking on my horses and I could see the pony over in a corner so I went over to see was he okay, but when I got there I saw that here was blood everywhere," said the distraught boy.

His father, who was nearby, then heard his son scream.

"I could hear him crying and screaming 'da, da'. I thought maybe a horse had fallen or something, but I couldn't believe what I saw when I ran over to him. It was sick," he said.

The shocking attack on the pony is now being investigated by gardai.

They say a witness reported seeing a man walk the animal to a secluded corner of the field before the attack happened.

The DSPCA was called to the scene to help gardai with their investigations.

"It is barbaric to do something like this to a defenceless animal," said DSPCA inspector Tony McGovern. "The horse was about two years old and was in perfect condition."

"Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing from the moment they went into the field. It was their intention to kill this animal."

The owners of the horse, who did not want to be named, said they had confronted a person in the field last week.

"We think this is some sort of retaliation for that. It is sick," the owners told the Herald.

Gardai are following a number of lines of inquiry. The land, between Clonsilla and Ongar, is owned by Menolly Homes.
