GARDAI are investigating allegations that a teenage boy was raped near a children's playground over the weekend.
A 17-year-old claims he was the victim of the serious sexual assault near the centre of Killarney, Co Kerry, on Saturday night.
Gardai responded to a call at 11pm and took the teen to the Sexual Assault Unit in Cork University Hospital for tests.
Killarney curate Fr Kevin McNamara said parishioners had been shocked.
A source close to the investigate said: "The spot is well known among locals. it's part of a huge national park.
"We sealed off an area close to the children's playground for a technical examination. We would be appealing to the public for information."
Vera O'Leary, of the Kerry Rape Crisis, said that there appeared to be an increase in the amount of young men coming forward to report rape while Mayor Sean Counihan said that he was appalled to think such a crime could happen in Killarney.
