Boy admits to drugs charge

A boy (15) who was found in possession of €50-worth of cannabis has been remanded on bail to await a pre-sentence probation report.

The boy pleaded guilty yesterday at the Children's Court to simple possession of the drug, in Finglas, Dublin, on February 9.

A garda told the court that the cannabis was found when the boy was stopped and searched.

He agreed with defence solicitor Gareth Noble that the teenager, who was 14 at the time, had no prior convictions.

Mr Noble described the incident as an "act of immaturity".

Soul's Teddy dies aged 59

SOUL singer Teddy Pendergrass, who became a sex symbol in the 1970s, has died aged 59.

His son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said he died at Bryn Mawr Hospital in suburban Philadelphia.

The singer, who is well-known for his forceful voice and passionate love ballads, became an inspirational figure after suffering a car accident in 1982 left him paralysed.

He underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery", his son said.

"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," he added. "He will live on through his music."
