Bill Gates wants end to malaria, polio

Philanthropist Bill Gates (pictured) believes that malaria and polio could be eradicated within the next 15 years - with polio gone as soon as 2019.

Speaking at an event on combating global poverty at Facebook's UK headquarters in London, Mr Gates said work to tackle the diseases was gradually shrinking the map of countries in which they are still prevalent.

The Microsoft founder - who through his Gates Foundation has donated billions of dollars to global health issues and international development - said he hoped that malaria could be eradicated by around 2030.
