Beckett bridge shut for safety checks

Dublin's newly opened Samuel Beckett Bridge was closed overnight for safety checks.

AA Roadwatch said today it had been told by the city council that the €60m overpass was shut for a number of hours.

The checks will be continuing throughout the week, though there appears to be no mention of the closures on the council's website.

The bridge is being shut between 8pm and 6am for the rest of the week, up until Sunday night/Monday morning.

An AA spokeswoman said she hopes it will not cause too much traffic disruption.

She said diversions are in place "so hopefully the traffic will move smoothly".

The bridge was opened last December. It stretches 120m across the River Liffey from Guild Street on the northside to Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the southside.
