'Beavis' veteran opens Newsbag of tricks

MAURICE Joyce is your secret childhood hero.

He worked on all the best 90s cartoons going from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Speed Racer to James Bond Jr. And he also helped to bring MTV's sniggering teens Beavis and Butthead to the big screen.

Pretty impressive stuff.

"I've been around a bit," the Tallaght native joked. Now Maurice is back in Ireland, directing brand new animation series Newsbag for 3e. Set in a web-based newsroom, the series has been described as a cross between the IT Crowd and South Park.

"I think Irish audiences really want something like this. There's a real niche in the market," he said. The series, penned by Gerard Barrett, begins on Saturday at 10pm. "The entire show is based around three pretty dumb guys Moss, Lenny and Gig," Maurice explained. "And the scenarios they get into are pretty hilarious."

He began his career working in the acclaimed Murakami Wolf Studios before moving to Hamburg, then Korea and then New York.

"Beavis and Butthead was amazing. We'd no idea how big it would become."

He added: "While I was working on that I met Mike Judge – he had just started King Of The Hill so I went to LA and directed that. Then I moved back to New York and directed for Disney."
