Axe man's hijack bid of mum, toddlers

A MOTHER had to rescue her two toddler children from her car during a hijacking where a a man threatened them with an axe.

The woman was waiting for her windscreen to thaw in Swords last Friday morning when she was dragged from her car.

Her attacker threatened to hit her with the axe as he got into the driver's seat.

The distressed mother then pleaded with the hijacker to allow her to take her two toddler children from the car. She grabbed the three-year-old and 11-month-old from the back seat before the attacker drove off.

The man then drove down Forrest Hill Road towards the Airside Retail park before eventually abandoning the car after he crashed into a roundabout.

Gardai were notified by locals who had reported a car driving on the wrong side of the road in the area. The man fled the scene before they arrived.

A Garda spokesman said that no arrest has been made in relation to the incident.

He said that they are investigating and have already interviewed a number of witnesses.

"She managed to take the kids out of the car and then he drove off before colliding with a lamppost not far from where the incident occurred.

"He drove on again to another housing estate in the area," the spokesman added.

"He then crashed on to a roundabout in Hollywell and fled the scene on foot."
