Attacker stabs man on his own doorstep

A YOUNG man is in serious condition in a Waterford hospital after being stabbed in early morning attack at his home.

The assault, near St John's Lane in Waterford city, happened shortly after 7am when the man answered a knock on his door.

Gardai suspect that the attack may be linked to an ongoing personal dispute.

The victim is in a serious condition in Waterford Regional Hospital in Ardkeen, but has been able to give a brief outline of the incident to Gardai.

SURGERY

He is scheduled to undergo emergency surgery later today.

The man, who is in his late 20s, sustained a stab wound to his upper leg and lower abdomen during the attack by a man known to him.

He also suffered a head injury though this was not inflicted by a knife.

The Herald understands the man's condition is not considered critical, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Gardai are trying to determine precisely how the man's head injury was sustained.

The alleged attacker, who is also in his late 20s, left the scene on foot but was later arrested by gardai. He is being questioned at Ballybricken Garda Station.

The man detained is understood to be known to gardai.

Gardai are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area to determine if anyone witnessed the attack or may have information on the circumstances of the assault.

Detectives are also checking CCTV security camera footage to determine the movements of the suspected attacker.
