A YOUNG athletics star, who defied all the odds to win an event she was too young to compete in, was among those honoured at the Evening Herald School Sports Awards in Croke Park.
Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner (14) of Colaiste Iosagain in Booterstown, was named Star of the Future. in the annual awards.
Diminutive Siofra hit the headlines when she won gold at the National Junior Cross-Country event despite being two years too young to compete. Siofra, a proud Gaelgeoir, told the Herald in both English and Irish that she was "shocked and delighted" to take home her award. The 26 winners from secondary schools across Dublin were presented their awards by Leinster winger Luke Fitzgerald and former Dublin midfielder Ciaran Whelan.
Sports Star of the Year was midfielder Naoise Maguire from the Colaiste Eanna senior hurling team and Coach of the Year was named as Newpark Rugby coach Andrew Adams. Team of the Year was awarded to Presentation College, Bray U16 basketball team.
