Armed jewellery raiders captured in chase

TWO armed raiders were arrested yesterday after threatening a jewellery shop worker and two gardai.

The men entered Celbridge Jewellers on Main street in the Co Kildare town with a handgun and crowbar and confronted a woman assistant.

They pointed the gun at her and demanded she hand over the contents of the till.

However the woman had pressed the panic button when the raiders entered and two gardai who were on patrol nearby rushed to the scene where they chased the men down a nearby cul-de-sac of a housing estate.

Threatened

One of the raiders, who was holding a bag of cash, then threatened the gardai with the firearm.

The officers managed to disarm the man, but his accomplice picked up the gun and pointed at them again.

However, both raiders were eventually overpowered by the gardai.

The female assistant was last night suffering from shock but was otherwise uninjured.

Last night the pair were being held in Leixlip garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act, where they can be held for up to 72 hours before being charged.

Officers were last night preparing to carry out ballistic tests on the gun and were investigating whether the men were running towards a planned base to drop off the money.
