A group of Dublin based members of the travelling community were among nine people arrested after an engagement party in the midlands sparked two separate street brawls in two different counties.

The first incident occurred in Strokestown in Co Roscommon, where the party was held, just before midnight.

A row broke out on Bridge Street in the town and a number of garda units responded from surrounding districts.

Three men and two juveniles were arrested and brought to Castlerea garda station where the three men were charged and bailed to appear in court at a later date.

The two underage males were cautioned under the juvenile liaison scheme.

All of those arrested were from the Finglas area.

The charges related to threatening and abusive behaviour and there were no reports of any serious injuries in the row.

Around three hours later a row broke out at Palace Crescent in Ardnacassa in Longford among a group of people who were believed to have attended the same engagement party in Strokestown.

Gardai from four districts, as well as members of the regional response team, reached the scene when the alarm was raised at 2.45am and found an angry street fight in progress.

Four men and a woman, who all live locally, were arrested for threatening and abusive behaviour, disorderly conduct and intoxication.

They were later released and are due to appear in court on September 15.
