Bake off contestant Ailish Carrigan starts to feel the pressure from this week's technical challenge

There was high drama in the Great Irish Bake Off kitchen last night as paramedics had to be called as one of the contestants dropped out.

Competitor Ailish Carrigan from Co Laois fell ill during a technical challenge as the pressure of a coffee cake bake became overwhelming.

Presenter Anna Nolan became concerned for the 41-year-old when her first attempt at the cake failed and she asked her if she was okay.

"I'm making a mess and I'm under a bit of pressure to be honest," Carrigan said.

"I couldn't get the butter to dissolve properly, it was so hard, it must have been straight from the fridge so I had to start all over again. I would have liked to been further at this stage."

Stress

Herald columnist Nolan tried her best to calm a stressed-out Carrigan down by asking her to take a few deep breaths.

Shortly after, Carrigan abandoned her cake and left the tent as she felt faint, which is when producers became concerned.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the show, which is filmed in Tinakilly House, Co Wicklow.

Later in the episode, Nolan was forced to be the bearer of bad news and announced to the other contestants that Carrigan would not be returning to the show.

Judges Paul Kelly and Lilly Higgins were left disappointed at the quality of this week's bakes and revealed that two contestants were very close to getting the chop.

However, following Ailish Carrigan's departure the judges decided not to eliminate anyone from the competition this week.

Meanwhile, Lily Higgins was delighted to announce Clare Ryan as this week's star baker.

"I was really delighted with Clare's winning bakes," she said.

"She really showed today what the show is all about.

"It's about amateur baking achieving professional standards," she added.
