Aggressive drunk spat at officer
after row

A DRUNKEN man spat at a female garda and tried to headbutt her following an incident at his ex-partner’s house, a court heard.

Athula De Silva (43) barricaded himself in his former partner’s box room and had to be restrained by gardai after he was removed.

Judge Dermot Dempsey adjourned sentencing to allow De Silva to complete 200 hours of voluntary work.

The defendant, of Cluain Ri, Ashbourne, Co Meath, admitted before Swords District Court to public drunkenness and threatening and abusive behaviour at Glen Ellen Green, Swords, last December 30.

Gda Stephen Harte said De Silva barricaded himself in the box room and was removed by officers. The court heard he was very drunk and verbally abused the gardai.

He said De Silva was restrained on the landing, where he tried to headbutt Gda Karen Duffy and spat at her.

He continued to be aggressive in the garda station, kicking a chair and table in the custody area.

Defence solicitor John Hennessy asked the judge to leave De Silva without a conviction, saying he was very sorry for his behaviour.
