Aer Lingus flights are boost for sunseekers

Holidaymakers, sports fans and business travellers will all benefit from the expansion of Aer Lingus's European network.

The new summer routes include the first direct scheduled flights between Dublin and Izmir in Turkey; Perpignan in France; and to the German city of Stuttgart. Izmir will prove popular with sun-lovers as it has easy access to top Turkish resorts. And it'll also be a blessing for Irish families who have bought, or want to rent, villas in Kusadasi, which is just an hour and a half away.

It is also an ideal base for exploring the Roman ruins of Ephesus, or even the resort of Bodrum, which is three-and- a-half hours away by car.

Perpignan is an ideal landing point for families camping in the popular nearby resort of Argeles-sur-Mer.

The seaside town is just half an hour away from the bustling city, compared with the long drive the length of France from Roscoff or Cherbourg.

Perpignan is also a gateway city to the Pyrenees and Spanish border, while the sports-mad region is home to many of France's top rugby teams.

The dynamic German city of Stuttgart -- in the top 30 of most liveable cities worldwide -- is home to the Porsche and Mercedes Benz museums, and has a wealth of beautiful squares and nightlife.

And it'll always be remembered fondly as the place where Ray Houghton put the ball in the England net at Euro 88.

Further afield, it's only an hour and a half from the uber-wealthy spa town of Baden-Baden, and is near the world famous Black Forest and the Swabian mountains.
