Accused had blade 'for his own protection'

A YOUNG man caught with a blade in his jacket when gardai stopped him had it for his own protection, a court heard.

James Lynch (20), admitted a weapons charge at Dublin District Court.

Judge Michael Walsh adjourned the case against him for the production of a pre-sentence probation report.

Lynch, of Donard Park, Cabra was stopped at the Central Bank Plaza at 11.15pm on April 28 last and had a Stanley blade in his jacket.

In separate incidents, on April 18 and May 5, he was arrested for hurling abuse at gardai in the city centre.

On May 1, he was arrested for being aggressive on a tram at Lower Abbey Street.

"Honestly, I had [the blade] for my protection because I was fighting with one or two people at the time," Lynch said.
