$590m lottery jackpot winner

A single ticket in Florida has matched all the numbers to win the highest Powerball lottery jackpot in history at an estimated $590.5m (€460m).

The winning ticket was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Florida.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low – one in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways the numbers can be combined.

But lottery officials estimated that about 80pc of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656m Mega Millions win in March 2012.

ROBBERY ALERT

HITS BAHAMAS

The US Embassy in the Bahamas is warning about the threat of armed robbery in the capital of the island chain off Florida's east coast.

Americans living in and travelling to the islands are advised to be on heightened alert to avoid being a crime victim.

It says "armed robbery remains a major threat" facing Americans in Nassau.

The message was issued after an Illinois man was fatally shot on a Nassau street during a robbery.

60 US HIKERS INJURED BY CAR

US police believe the driver who ploughed into dozens of hikers marching in a Virginia mountain town parade suffered from a medical condition and did not cause the crash intentionally.

About 50 to 60 people suffered injuries ranging from critical to superficial. No fatalities were reported.

The crash happened on Saturday afternoon during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival in Damascus, near the Tennessee border, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail.
