¤500k cocaine taximan jailed

A taxi driver caught with €562,000 worth of cocaine has been sentenced to ten years jail with six years suspended.

Dennis Ashe (47) of Dorset Street, Dublin 1, had denied the charges but pleaded guilty after phone records linked him to two co-accused -- who had pleaded guilty.

Ashe's taxi was stopped in Pearse Street, Dublin at 9.40am on April 10. There was a black holdall bag in the car containing eight kilos of cocaine, worth €562,000.

Syria death toll now tops 150

Security forces pursuing anti-government activists shot dead 47 people in Syria, pushing the toll for two days of violence to nearly 150.

Syrian state television showed pictures of military manoeuvres and said they were meant to show its forces are ready to "repulse any aggression the enemies of our nations might think about".

Activist groups said about 100 people were killed on Monday.
