AN EU report has identified 2,278 unsafe products that were banned or recalled from consumers in the last year.
Clothing, textiles and toys topped the list of offenders, making up more than half of all unsafe products reported to the EU's rapid alert system, RAPEX. The figures show a 26pc rise in alerts last year compared to 2011.
Some 24 products were notified by the Irish authorities, or 1pc of the total. Most of the safety scares came from clothing and textile products followed by toys. Chemical risks were commonly cited – a skin-lightening product and plastic doll containing banned chemicals were two items identified by RAPEX system and taken out of circulation last year.
Motor vehicles and electrical appliances made up the other most frequently reported products last year.
