16 die as bus suffers blowout

Mexican authorities say a bus apparently went out of control after a blowout and turned over, killing 16 people in central Hidalgo state.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon as a group of tourists was returning to Mexico City from a weekend trip to the thermal baths in the town of Santa Maria Amajac.

Witnesses reported that the bus driver lost control when the vehicle blew a tyre. The bus hit a guard rail and flipped.

THERE was a close call between a military helicopter and a regional airliner attempting to land at Reagan National Airport near Washington, US.

At their closest point, the two aircraft were only 950ft apart, said Eric Weiss, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

Chicago authorities say at least six people have been killed in weekend violence and at least another 11 wounded.
