THREE murders over the weekend have brought the number of people who have died violently since the start of the year to 13.
Gangland crime has, in the past, produced a high number of tit-for-tat murders which have resulted in increased homicide figures, but that is not the case this year.
Gang-related murders make up a minority of the statistics for 2014 and nobody has yet been charged with these killings. But in the majority of cases, suspects have already been arrested and charged.
To put the current homicide figures into context, in 2013 it was mid-June before the figure of 13 was finally reached. This year, the victims have been:
January 1: Wayne McQuillan (30) stabbed to death in Drogheda. One person charged.
