12pc less energy used

ENERGY consumption in Ireland fell by 12pc between 2008 and 2011 new European figures have identified.

The drop is the second largest in the EU after Lithuania, says Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

However, the figures also show that Ireland is one of the most energy dependent countries in the EU, with almost 89pc imports.

The Irish figures are in line with the EU as a whole.
