€10m debtors chased

CREDIT unions are increasingly pursuing their customers through the courts for unpaid debts, which in some cases amount to thousands of euro.

New research by vision-net.ie shows that one third of credit unions have taken court cases against their customers for unpaid debt this year. The number of cases so far this year is already 13pc higher than the total taken in 2010.

In one case, a credit union was awarded more than €845,000 owed by a single customer.

The total value of the judgments in their favour is also up by €1.2m to more than €10m.
