10 years to the day we qualified in Iran

IT'S exactly 10 years to the day that Ireland qualified for their last major tournament, deep in the hostile surrounds of Iran.

On November 15, 2001, Mick McCarthy led his Irish team minus the influential Roy Keane to the intimidating cauldron of the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.

Goals from Ian Harte and Robbie Keane in the first leg at Lansdowne Road had given Ireland a 2-0 win but we suffered a few close shaves in the home tie and nothing was a given.

Yahya Golmohammadi's injury time effort wasn't enough to save his side, or any of the windows in what seemed like the thousands of cars parked on the road leading away from the stadium, and Ireland scraped through for a nailbiting play-off victory.
