New inquest in surgery death

A FRESH inquest has been ordered into the death of a Dublin man who died while undergoing cosmetic surgery on holiday in Colombia.

High Court president, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, yesterday quashed an open verdict returned at the inquest into Pierre Christian Lawlor's death, and ordered a new inquest take place.

The judge said Dublin County Coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty should have agreed to Mr Lawlor's family's request to adjourn the July 2008 inquest given the "unusual and tragic" circumstances involved.

Farmer wins windfarm case

A WOMAN has been awarded €341,830 over damage to her farm from a bogslide during construction of the country's largest windfarm.

In the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Eamon De Valera made the award to Mary Curley, whose family have farmed 16 acres at Derrybrien, Gort in Galway for three generations.

Mrs Curley sued the ESB subsidiary Hibernian Power Ltd and Saorgas Energy Ltd, now Gort Windfarms Ltd who built the wind farm and Coillte Teoranta who leased the land on which the windfarm was built.

Michaels back in hospital

The rocker and reality TV star Bret Michaels suffered what doctors call a "warning stroke" and has been diagnosed with a hole in the heart.

Michaels (47) was hospitalised after experiencing numbness on the left side of his body, particularly in his face and hands.

Doctors said the condition is operable and treatable and likely unrelated to the brain haemorrhage that the Poison frontman suffered last month.

Lethal injection for US killer

A US death row inmate who killed two men in separate shootings was executed.

Darick Demorris Walker (37) died by injection at Greensville Correctional Centre in Virginia.

Walker was convicted of killing Stanley Beale in 1996 and Clarence Elwood Threat in 1997. Virginia law allows the death penalty for anyone who commits two premeditated murders within three years.
