Mourner broke taxi window

A GRIEVING young man smashed the window of a taxi as he was heading home drunk from his grandfather's funeral, a court heard.

David Lindsay (23), of Earlsfort Green in Lucan, had spent the day drinking.

He smashed the car window in frustration after he told the taxi driver he had no money on him and the driver refused to take him home.

Judge Denis McLoughlin at Blanchardstown District Court ordered Lindsay to pay €440 compensation to the taxi driver and said he would apply the Probation Act.

The incident took place at Littlepace Road in Clonee on July 11.

The taxi driver drove the defendant to Blanchardstown Garda Station, where he admitted the offence and co-operated with gardai.

Bionic eye for Australian

A bionic eye has given an Australian woman partial sight in what researchers say is an important step towards helping visually impaired people get around independently.

Dianne Ashworth was fitted with a prototype bionic eye in May in Sydney. It was switched on a month later.
