Mor' glory in Athlone!
ATHLETICS: Elizabeth Morland of Dunshaughlin Community College proved the star of the Aviva All-Ireland Schools Combined Events Championships in Athlone.
Her score of 3,617 not only gave her the intermediate title, but was by some way the highest of the day and just shy of the personal best 3,701 she set at the Leinster Schools Championships last month.
In the combined events, performances translate into points and Morland scored a massive 931 for her time of 8.90 secs in the 60m hurdles, shaving 0.2 of a second off her Leinster time. She equalled her best of 1.68m in the high jump for 830 points and completed her competition with a solo effort of 2:34.67 in the 800m.
Mark Rogers of St Joseph's CBS in Drogheda won the senior boy's title.
In the junior girls' category, five athletes scored more than 3,000 points, with Arlene Crossen of Loreto Letterkenny the winner on 3,289 followed by Shannon Sheehy of St Michael's Navan and Niamh Kelly from Sacred Heart Drogheda.
The senior girls produced another close competition when Katie Hyland of Sacred Heart Westport beat Amy McTeggart from Our Lady's Greenhills by just 14 points.
