Ministers attack world hunger

The Government will demand an end to world hunger at an international conference in New York today.

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin and Overseas Development Minister Peter Power will represent Ireland at the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit.

Speaking ahead of the two-day talks, Mr Power said they will press for an urgent focus on the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

Four killed in apartment blast

Four people died and a policeman was seriously injured after a blast in an apartment building and shooting in a nearby hospital in a town in south-western Germany.

Two people were found dead in the apartment building, officials said, and another woman was seen running from the blast into the neighbouring St Elisabeth hospital, where she reportedly opened fire, killing a member of the hospital staff. The woman was killed in an exchange of gunfire. Authorities are still searching for a motive.

Film could help save tigers

A few seconds of film showing tigers roaming wild in the foothills of the Himalayas could provide the "missing link" to an ambitious plan to try to save them from extinction.

A team from the BBC Natural History Unit captured the images using hidden cameras wedged into gullies and trees over six weeks during an expedition to Bhutan. The film is the first real evidence that tigers can thrive -- and breed -- in the hills which are more than 13,000ft above sea level.

Quaid arrested over 'squatting'

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife were arrested after being found apparently squatting at a California home they owned years ago.

In the couple's second brush with the law in the past year, the Quaids were stopped by police in the upscale community of Montecito on Saturday, police said. Randy Quaid was booked on suspicion of burglary and entering a building without consent. His wife, Evi, was booked on those charges as well as resisting arrest.
