Manchester's Champions League crisis

MANCHESTER has a Champions League crisis on its hands and there is now a distinct possibility that neither City nor United will still be involved when the year turns.

Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City were ambushed in Naples last night and poor defending may have holed the club’s Champions League challenge below the waterline.

Alex Ferguson had the same complaint at Old Trafford against Benfica where an own-goal from Phil Jones and a major defensive blunder between David de Gea and Rio Ferdinand allowed the Portuguese to steal a point and the top spot in Group C. But Ferguson and Manchester United still control their own destiny and a win or draw in Basel in two weeks time will be enough to ensure their passage through to the knockout stage. Mancini must beat Bayern Munich and hope that Napoli fall short against Group A whipping boys Villareal. “I am disappointed about the result and I am sorry for the lads,” said Mancini.
