Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is to slap a massive €200,000 fine on defender Marcos Rojo.

The Argentine defender is facing the expensive punishment after he failed to join his team mates on their pre-season tour of the United States at the weekend.

Rojo was due to fly to America following an extended break after competing for Argentina in the Copa America, but he was stopped from boarding the plane after it was discovered that his passport had expired.

Van Gaal is understood to be far from impressed by the 25-year-old's mishap and will fine him two week's wages for failing to join up with the rest of the squad as the club continues to prepare for the start of the Premier League season.

Rojo's fellow Argentine, Angel di Maria was due to join him on the flight across the Atlantic after also being given extended leave following the Copa America, but he too failed to board the plane as a move to Paris St Germain looms.

The French giants have yet to meet United's valuation of a player they paid £59.7m for last year.
