Malala donates $50k to Gaza

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has donated $50,000 (€39,600) to help rebuild a UN school in Gaza that was damaged during the summer's Israel-Hamas war, the UN said.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said Malala was donating all the World's Children's Prize award.

UNRWA quoted her as saying Palestinian children deserve a quality education, and that "without education, there will never be peace".

Club sorry for 'Ebola party'

A nightclub has apologised after staging an Ebola-themed Halloween party.

Bar Risa in Birmingham admitted making a "huge error" and said it will donate the profits from Wednesday night's event to the Doctors Without Borders charity.

An advert said the city's Broad Street had been "infected" by the deadly disease and the World Health Organisation was advising people to go to the bar for "decontamination".

Hopes fade for trapped miners

A government official says hopes are fading for 18 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in Turkey.

Rescue workers are using huge pipes to pump water from 350 metres underground, but Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said yesterday that the operation is being hampered by mud and damage inside the mine.

There has been no contact with the 18 men since they were trapped on Tuesday amid surging waters in the Has Sekerler mine near Ermenek in Karaman province.

Polish officials quiz Polanski

Prosecutors in Poland have questioned film-maker Roman Polanski at the request of US counterparts who are seeking his arrest on charges from 1977 of having sex with a minor.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutors in Krakow said Polanski remained free but available for further proceedings.

Polanski's movements are restricted by an Interpol warrant in effect in 188 countries, but he travels freely between Switzerland, France and Poland.
