Why you should turn into a loose woman

As I said recently, I am a loose woman – meaning, I prefer using loose powder to pressed.

It wasn't always the way, as the loose stuff can get pretty messy, and you need to have the proper brush to hand. One or two of the powders below, however, make all the fuss worth it.

SMASHBOX Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, €49, HHHHI This comes with a beauty innovation that is bar none, as far as loose powder is concerned: a shaver that works on the same principle as a cheese grater. You twist the dial and just the right amount of powder is ground up for application. This is a hero product of the Smashbox line and I liked it almost loads: it goes on silky and smooth, but I felt like it didn't take me through the whole day.

LUSH Emotional Brilliance Translucent Powder, €14.95, ★★☆☆☆ The opening for this jar is so tiny, you need a tiny brush – and a tiny applicator is not what you need when applying loose powder. The bigger the brush the better, because you want a light touch with massive coverage. I tried really hard to make this work, but no joy.

RIMMEL Match Perfection: Silky Loose Face Powder, €9.65, HIIII Here's an accident waiting to happen. My impatience + clear protective adhesive thing that won't peel off = powder flippin' everywhere. I curbed my desire to just rip the thing to bits, and did manage to remove it, eventually. Not worth it in the end, as the finish was too powdery and it wallowed into my pores.

CLARINS Loose Mineral Powder, €38, HHHII Well, hmm. There's a little sieve in the top of this, which is meant to dole out the powder in small amounts, but it is not a grater, so it really isn't any use. There's still scope for powder flying everywhere, so go slow – and it is worth it in the end.

STILA Set & Illuminate Baked Powder Trio, €31.50, HHHHH I don't know what I would do without this in my life. It's got that convenient shaver and as it shaves, it combines three different colours which set your foundation lightly and brighten your complexion. Love. It. Loads.
