Which tele vixen

They're the magnetic leading ladies in the TV series millions of women are hooked on, so is there any chance female viewers are tuning in because they recognise themselves in the women on screen, or because they wish they were more like them?

It helps that the stars and their compelling screen characters are part of brilliant storylines and great ensemble casts -- so which one of our recent crop of televixens are you?

Claire Danes (32) is Carrie Mathison in Homeland

Driven CIA agent obsessively hunting down a terrorist who she suspects turned an American prisoner of war against his country. Carrie graduated from Princeton University with a BA in Arabic languages and literature and also suffers from bipolar disorder for which she secretly takes an antipsychotic medication.

It's suggested that at some point she had a relationship with her boss, which led to the break-up of his marriage.

>Stereotypical modern careerist who is making a success of her work life and a mess of her personal life.

Sofia Vergara (39) is Gloria Delgado-PriTchett in Modern Family

A Colombian native from a small village which also happens to be the murder capital of the country, Gloria provides many laughs in this Stateside urban comedy series.

She is much younger than her successful husband but this doesn't seem to matter to her, and she is convincing as a loyal wife. Her voluptuous figure and skimpy clothes are regularly commented on by other characters on the show.

>Trophy wife with a heart of gold even if she looks like a gold-digger.

Michelle Dockery (30) is Lady Mary Crawley in Downton Abbey

Lady Mary is snobby and shallow, and the eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham in this period drama which has us all wanting to waltz, wear silk evening dresses and have fainting fits.

Her feistiness is seen in how she has a bit of a tumble with a guest, but most of all Mary is used to getting attention from men as her parents try to marry her off. Her wedding to Matthew is expected to kick off the new series in autumn.

>A cold operator intent on making things work to her advantage, so falls badly when love finally gets a grip of her.

Julianna Margulies (45) is Alicia Florrick in The Good Wife

Betrayed wife Alicia was partly inspired by the Eliot Spitzer sex scandal, as well as by other prominent American political sex scandals -- particularly those of John Edwards and Bill Clinton. The series' creators were motivated by what they thought might be going through a woman's mind when she stands by a cheating man.

When husband Peter is jailed following a sex and corruption scandal, Alicia is shocked and goes into the role of dignified and supportive wife, yet when she returns to a career in law, anger and ambition kicks in.

>Survivor who picks herself up when her perfect marriage and home life turn out to be a sham.

Christina Hendricks (36) is Joan Holloway in Mad Men

Hendricks has given a new lease of life to any woman over a size 12 by flaunting her curves in the series' sixties' fashion. While on the face of it her character Joan is a victim of the inequitable power struggles of the decade, she is also the one running the advertising agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, and sometimes the personal lives of her colleagues.

> Is all woman when she wants to be, but one of the boys when it counts.
