Watch out, the clocks go forward tonight...

DON'T forget to move your clock forward by an hour tonight for the official start of summer time.

You may lose an hour's sleep but the upside is the extra daylight every evening from now on and through the summer.

Be warned, however, that the time-change can affect the body's circadian rhythm -- the body clock that controls mood, energy levels and alertness -- and can cause stress as the body struggles to adjust.

A sudden loss of an hour's sleep can lead to more sleepiness, for a day or two until sleep has re-adjusted, says Professor Jim Horne of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University in the UK.


The Swedes have an even gloomier take on the change. Scientists at Karolinska Institutet have just completed a study which shows that adjusting the clocks increases the risk of heart attack.

Their findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that heart attacks increase, on average, by about 5pc during the first week of summer time.

The team have also found this risk reverses when the clock reverts to winter time.

The team believes the study can improve our understanding of how disruptions to diurnal rhythms impact on health.
