No easy way to bust cellulite

IT'S alarming to see that there are children as young as 12 to 14 and upwards who are starting to get that dimpled cellulite look on their arms, hips and tummies. This is an unusually young age for children to get this and even more worrying is the fact that both boys and girls have similar problems.

This cellulite can be brought on by a high sugary and a fast-food diet which causes the body to store fat under the skin. Also the food industry has a lot to answer for with the amount of additives and hormones which are put in our food.

This can certainly play havoc with our hormones – as can be seen by children reaching puberty at 12 years of age and younger. The body is maturing too fast. Some parents even go down the cosmetic surgery route which I do not recommend.

The problem is if you remove cellulite or fat from any body part and don't change your diet and lifestyle, the fat will accumulate in other areas such as the back and chest.

Don't believe the television advertisements that try to convince you a miracle will happen overnight. All medical procedures have their own risks and limitations.

Having trained thousands of people, men and women, to reduce fat, I believe a lifestyle change over a long period of time is required.

I remember one girl who had very bad cellulite on her legs and bottom who came to me for help. Over a six-month period of training with light weights, some Ki massage, fast walking and cutting out all junk food and sugary drinks and cereals (which can have a very high sugar content), she entered and won a beauty competition.

 

Massage

Actress Linda Gray, from Dallas, told me the most effective treatment of cellulite for her was massage followed by a hard workout, in that order. Massage breaks down fat and exercise helps to transport it for elimination.

Some other factors that can cause cellulite might include stress, hormones, the pill, junk food, too much alcohol and too little exercise or movement. This is also a tip for the guys, who can have it on chest, back, hips, which can get flabby with soft fat.

Men often revert to surgery, but again, without a complete lifestyle change, the fat will reoccur. It's simply a by-product of how we eat and live.

So what is cellulite?

The prevalence of 'cottage cheese' thighs in Ireland is a boon to the cosmetic industry. Anti-cellulite creams abound, all making different claims as to how they deal with the problem.

Some claim they break down cellulite to release the toxins. Others claim to increase circulation to carry away the toxins that are the main cause of cellulite, or release water trapped in unsightly ripples.

Yet, as Dr Peter Fodder, president of the Lipoplasty Society emphasises, there are no toxins, and there is no trapped water.

Cellulite is just ordinary body fat sitting under the skin in tiny pockets separated by connective tissue.

Creams or lotions cannot remove a molecule unless they contain a drug that can penetrate the skin and enter the fat underneath. All such drugs are in the experimental stage and it will be years before American licensing body, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approves one. Even then it will be strictly available on prescription.

That leaves changes in your lifestyle – your diet and exercise levels in particular – as the only sure way of beating cellulite.
