It’s Superb by name, Superb by nature . . .

The last Skoda Superb was so good ... I bought one.

OK, so I probably knew what most others didn't at the time - that it was basically a long wheel-based Passat. It even looked like a Passat and the changes inside and out were merely cosmetic.

The only visible difference? The badge and the price tag.

It was a no-brainer - a tried and tested much-sought-after luxury carriage that’s around five thousand cheaper.

It's since covered 87,000 care free miles and the only major repair has been an new alternator, which apparently is notorious across the entire VW range.

So, was I expecting big things from the allnew Superb? You bet - and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was blown away.

Never before has a luxury saloon come with so many extras as standard.


Electric, leather heated seats, sat nav, Parking Assistant (which parallel parks the car for you), bi-zenon head lamps with AFS (lights which corner with the car) and integrated telescopic headlamp washers, cruise control, on-board computer, electric folding mirrors and up to 20GB of internal music storage and DVD play-back

Following in the footsteps of its older brother the new model is again gargantuan inside, but the Czech outfit have learned from design faults of the past. The 2002 to mid-2005 Classic model hadn’t got folding rear seats which was a major no no.

Instead of following, the Superb is now leading the way in technology and they stunned the motoring world with their brilliant TwinDoor which means you can have a saloon that, with the flick of a switch, turns into a hatchback.

Genius, the hatchback saloon dilemma solved in an instant.

But it was the drive and handling which lured many brand loyal motorists coupled with the unrivalled level of comfort for those pumping up big miles.

This time round it’ll be the eco-friendly GreenLine badge which is sure to impress. The 1.6 litre TDi diesel bangs out a very decent 105bhp while producing less than 120g/km of CO2.

Thanks to stop/start function the Superb falls into VRT Band A with annual road tax of just €104, while returning 60+mpg.

My only gripe is having to give it back. Price (without scrappage) for the 1.6 TDI Elegance model tested is €28,995.
