Jane Eyre gets racy re-write as erotic fiction surges in popularity

"READER, I married him", one of the most famous lines in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, might take on an altogether racier tone when the 1847 novel gets an erotic rewrite later this summer.

In an attempt to cash in on the growing trend for steamy adult fiction, a racy reworking of Ms Bronte's famous book will be released by publisher Pan Macmillan in August.

Jane Eyre Laid Bare has been billed by author Eve Sinclair as "an erotic version of my favourite classic".

The book will chart the "smouldering sexual chemistry" between put-upon heroine Jane and Mr Rochester, a brooding man many years her senior.

It will be initially released as an ebook, with a paperback to follow "shortly afterwards", according to The Bookseller magazine.

Erotic fiction has seen a revival in recent months thanks to the growing popularity of ereaders.
