The old-time menu

THIRTY years ago the roast dinner was the most popular meal served up for the family.

Others staples were: meat and two veg, shepherd's pie, chicken casserole, pork chops, cottage pie and lamb chops.

Mothers of that era were generally good cooks but had to rely on word of mouth and their own inventiveness to produce meals, rather than recipes from TV chefs, and as such were more likely to cook the same things over and over again.
