Hands up who's into Feng Shui? Hands up who knows what it is? Anyone? It's one of those terms that's bandied about without any real understanding of what it means.
Take a pinch of Yin, a dollop of Yang, throw in a pile of bricks and mortar, stir it around, point it south-east and bingo, you have the meaning of spatial life?
Feng Shui is the way in which one can decorate a room in order to create an energy fitting the needs of the space. So, for example, if you work from home, you may want to create space that has a vibrant, energetic feel to it. This in turn will offer the incentive and drive needed to get your job done. On the other hand, you may want to create a different vibe in the bedroom. Using Feng Shui in the right way might allow you to design a space that offers a relaxed environment.
Essentially, it's balancing the 'chi' (energy) in the room with the chi in you.
The most important thing to remember with Feng Shui is that it is individual. What will work for one person may not necessarily work for another.
So, how can we get the most from our space? These pointers will guide you towards your own nirvana.
1 Clear the clutter It can be heart-breaking at times, but clearing your home of unwanted or unnecessary items is the first step to understanding what you can gain from your house and what it can give you back in return.
2 air and light Without these two elements, it can be difficult to create the right atmosphere for your lifestyle.
3 Draw AN energy map Aka the 'Bagua' has eight areas -- marriage, children, knowledge, benefactors, career, family, wealth and fame. The map will aid the Feng Shui in your house. Each of the eight areas is associated with an element (wood, fire, earth etc) and colour. Each colour works with an element and takes account of the room's orientation.
4 Furniture Work out what will work for the purposes that you intend for your room.
5 Placement Once you know what items you need for the room, it's important to know where to place them. Your bagua energy map will help.
