Poor sleep thought to cause type 2 diabetes

SLEEP can help ward off type 2 diabetes and obesity, experts have claimed.

Researchers reviewing previous studies found a link between poor sleep and metabolic disorders.

Disruption of the body's natural cycle through shift work is also associated with chronic illness and early death, the scientists discovered, adding studies were beginning to show a link between sleep loss and our ability to process sugar and control appetites.

The German and Swiss authors wrote in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology: "These findings open up new strategies for interventions aimed at the epidemic of the metabolic syndrome and related diseases.

"Future studies will show whether interventions to improve sleep can prevent or reverse these traits.

"Healthcare professionals can be safely recommended to motivate their patients to enjoy sufficient sleep," the report added.
