MY name is Emma Dodrill, and I'm a 27-year-old public servant from Castleknock in Dublin.

This June will see me take part in my sixth consecutive Flora Women's Mini Marathon.

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and every year since I've run the Flora Women's Mini Marathon on behalf of breast cancer support charities.

As one of a family going through cancer, I saw first-hand at the different centres the bravery and inner-strength of women and how they deal with their predicament so positively and continue to put other people's needs before theirs.

This selflessness empowered me to run for charities that support so many strong women fighting breast cancer.

Last year, while attending an aerobics class with Summerfield Fitness, I heard that they also had a running group preparing women who wished to run the Flora Women's Mini Marathon.

I signed up straight away because I felt that with the support and encouragement of a group I would be able to improve my distance, speed and overall fitness.

We started off with leader Ellie Heffernan taking our different levels of fitness into consideration and slowly increased our distance up to our goal of 10km.

On the day of the Flora Women's Mini Marathon last year, I knew I was well able to run the 10km in the goal time I had set myself. When the run got tough, I thought of all the different mottos the girls said to keep each other going while training.

FRIENDS

I managed to take more than 10 minutes off my previous run as well as improving my overall fitness.

I would highly recommend joining a running group in preparation for the Flora Women's Mini Marathon. I made great friends, I was under the guidance of a sports specialist and I got to participate in lots of chat and laughter, with a constant feeling of encouragement towards each other.

I'm looking forward to June 2, and once again I hope to achieve a personal best. The atmosphere on the day is fantastic, and all the participants encourage each other. The positivity you feel reading fellow participants' t-shirts with messages of hope and support as you run alongside each other is a terrific motivator.

You feel pride for each other and, come rain or shine, people line the streets of the full 10km distance to support all the women.
