How to create a training schedule

WITH the recent launch of the Flora Women's Mini Marathon (FWMM) 2014 comes the motivation to start training. Planning is the key to success, and Elverys Sports has some simple tips to help you sort out a regime for the coming months.

Ideally, consult a reliable source (coach, club or online) for help. Coaching Ireland, which is in partnership with Elverys Sports, can direct you to your nearest club or group. See www.coachingireland.com.

Start by setting realistic goals, but don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

With your long-term goal to successfully complete the FWMM established, you now need to set short-term goals. These will help to maintain focus and provide direction while gradually improving your fitness.

Start by deciding when you will train, taking into consideration your work and family demands.

Next, choose the type of activity you will perform. Remember, variety is the spice of life.

Decide who you will train with. Making a commitment to a training buddy or group is a sure way to stick to a routine and guarantees enjoyment while doing it.

There are fantastic Meet and Train and Fit4Life groups all over the country.

Track your improvement by performing a timed walk or run, or by entering a race.

Include these markers for improvement at set intervals, perhaps every four weeks. Keeping a log of your training allows achievements and improvements to be seen, thus fuelling confidence.

Remember, it is vital to review completed training, restructure future training if necessary and reset goals depending on progress.
