The Parfums Givenchy beauty line was born of Hubert de Givenchy's acclaimed couture house and a friendship with one of Hollywood's most famous and beautiful faces, Audrey Hepburn.
De Givenchy discovered Hepburn, his muse, when he created her wardrobe for the film Sabrina in 1954.
Becoming friends and collaborators, they invented the Givenchy style, described as “French elegance meets American glamour”.
Parfums Givenchy was founded in 1957; its first fragrance L’Interdit created as a homage to Hepburn. More fragrances followed, including Monsieur de Givenchy in 1959 and Givenchy Gentleman in 1975, and perfumes Ysatis (1984) and Organza (1996). In 2003, Very Irrésistible Givenchy, with an ad campaign fronted by actress Liv Tyler, updated the relationship between cinema and fashion.
Today, Givenchy the brand is a comprehensive collection of perfumes, make-up and skincare products. It has become a major player in the skincare business, offering innovative formulas in targeted lines No Complex for the body, Skin Drink for the face and Power Youth for young women.
Under artistic director Nicolas Degennes, Givenchy Le Makeup provides more than a few ‘must buys’ in every collection. More than 150 Givenchy make-up references are based on the brand’s Prisme principle, and each season new products and limited editions reach counters.
Recent launches include the Limited Edition Blush Gelée in Candide Pink (€31.50) which features a foam applicator tip to add radiance to cheeks and the skin tone, perfecting Photo'Perfexion Light Evanescent Fluid Foundation (€41.50).
The fans: Rihanna, Liv Tyler and Uma Thurman.
If you buy just one prodduct: Give Phenomen'Eyes mascara (€28) a go. Launched in 2008, its spherical brush was a bit of a revolution in the make-up industry, allowing precision application (and spawned a host of copy-cat products). The mascara features a formula based on water and a cutting-edge polymer. When the mascara is applied, the water evaporates, allowing the polymer to shape, separate and lengthen.
The price: The Givenchy Le Makeup range starts with Vernis Please! Nail Lacquer at €16.50.
