From dreamy new romantics to disco glitter and glam

Spring is here, and now is the perfect time to go for a fresh look. The two big trends for spring/summer are 'romance' and 'disco', according to beauty expert Martina Kelly, from Face-it Studio in Kildare, who has just opened her first beauty school.

Martina regularly gives make-up courses, and offers great tips on how to achieve this season's hot looks. She says: "'Romance' is a girly look, perfect for day time with lots of pinks and taupes, while 'disco' is for Saturday nights and focuses on dramatic eyes and bright lips.

"The great thing about 'romance' is that anyone can wear it. The look involves layering, to create a soft dreamy effect. Think vintage rose."

Here are her guidelines: Use a base of light foundation for a clear flawless face. Layer a pale pink blusher onto your cheeks to add definition and girly glow.

When it comes to eyes, there's a whole spectrum of pinks and mauves that can be blended to create the look. Mix a candy pink with a subtle taupe. And complete the eyes with a slick of mascara. Use a light touch for a natural finish and comb the lashes out for a wide-eyed effect. Enhance your lips with a dab of berry colour and a slick of sheer gloss to finish, or keep it simple with nude lipstick.

Martina's make-up courses in Face-it Studio not only teach the tricks of the beauty trade to clients, but also how to tailor a make-up bag to your individual needs. She continues: "If you've got a night out then 'disco' is the look to go for. Colour adds drama and anything goes. It's about glitter and glam."

She suggests using lots of colour to channel the 1970s. Go for emerald green, denim blue or canary yellow, and don't be afraid to experiment.

False lashes are a fantastic way to create knock-out eyes. Apply them once you've blended your eyeshadow and fan them out to the corners of your eyes.

Glitter can be used anywhere on the face. Brush some across your browline to lift your eyes or dab onto cheeks for a party feel.

Luscious lips are a must. Try hot pink or ruby red. The brighter the better. Apply colour with a brush and top up with gloss for a juicy pout.

"Whether you're going for sheen or sparkle, it's all in the application" says Martina. "Finding the right make-up to suit you is crucial for a glamorous evening look."

Knowing this season's looks will boost your confidence, she feels, "Once you know how, just go for it."
