Blending science and nature for pleasure

In 1958, Pierre Darphin, a French specialist in cosmetology, launched a research programme which used plant extracts, botanical aromas and active skin treatments. The result was an innovative beauty concept and an eponymous skincare range.

That year he opened his first beauty institute in Paris. It became home to a wide range of products following Darphin's tri-dimensional skincare philosophy and holistic approach to skincare. Darphin would analyse every part of the body of a client, from the skin to the hair and teeth, to best diagnose and treat conditions from within.

The brand uses a 'pleasure principle', based on Darphin's belief that "you can't look good if you don't feel good". He recognised that pleasure, derived from touch, sight and smell, has a positive impact on a person's sense of well-being.

With essential oils, botanicals and lovely textures, Darphin products have been created to provide a multi-dimensional, multi-sensory experience.

Blending science and nature, the Darphin brand uses a '3D method' (repair, balance and replenish) to treat skin. The serums (repair) are made from a cocktail of plant molecules, which treats the skin at the cellular level, oxygenating and helping to draw cream and oils down to the dermis.

The aroma-care oils (balance) are made from plant essences and help to detoxify, regenerate and balance the skin.

The final stage, the creams (replenish) moisturise, protect and work on the surface appearance of the skin.

Estee Lauder Companies purchased Darphin Laboratories in 2003 and the brand has gone from strength to strength, offering face, hair and body products as well as perfumes. The Intral range, designed to tackle sensitive skin, was launched in 2008 and last month the brand launched a pigmentation-tackling Melaperfect Anti Dark Spot Corrector.

The fans: Big-name fans include Dita Von Teese and Ashley Olsen.

If you buy just one product: Darphin Hydraskin Serum (€45) is a light yet intensely hydrating serum that soothes and softens dry skin.

Where to get it: The brand is available from Arnotts, Space NK at Harvey Nichols, Dundrum Town Centre and selected salons.
